Blackout Dates

The program was started to complement Metrolink's and the North County Transit District’s (NCTD’s) schedule options using Pacific Surfliner trains that had additional capacity. Because there are certain known periods when travel demand increases, the program is suspended around major holidays and special events.

For 2025, blackout dates apply on the following dates:

  • Memorial Day weekend: May 23 – May 27
  • Opening weekend of Del Mar Horseracing Season: July 18 – July 21
  • San Diego Comic-Con International: July 23 – July 27
  • Labor Day weekend: August 29 – September 2
  • Week of Thanksgiving: November 26 – December 1

Additional dates may be added if needed.

Shared Service (Code Share) Trains on Metrolink’s Ventura County Line

Pacific Surfliner participates in a shared service (Code Share) program with Metrolink to provide additional departure options for travelers.

Code Share Includes:

  • Pacific Surfliner trains 761, 765, 769, 770, 774, 777, 784, 785, 790, and 794 will accept Metrolink tickets (one-way, round-trip, 7-day and monthly passes) between Los Angeles and Ventura.
  • Pacific Surfliner tickets will also be accepted on any Metrolink train traveling between Los Angeles and the Ventura Downtown / Beach station.

Please note: The Code Share service program is not subject to the same blackout dates as the Rail 2 Rail Program. For Code Share, blackouts will occur during periods when the Pacific Surfliner service is designated as “all-reserved.”  Also, Code Share may be suspended when Pacific Surfliner trains  are at capacity. When the program is temporarily suspended due to train capacity, efforts will be made to communicate this through conductor and station announcements, as well as service alert information.

Code Share will be suspended on the following dates:

  • Week of Thanksgiving: Wednesday, November 26 – Monday, December 1, 2025

Metrolink customers must print or activate their ticket before boarding the train. Code Share trains are not available on Pacific Surfliner trains south of Los Angeles.
